Bear Island Light
Bear Island, near the town of Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island, is one of a group of islands that make up the Cranberry Isles. Authorized in 1838 to help mariners entering Northeast Harbor and Somes Sound, the light was finished for $3000 in 1839.
Today the lighthouse is maintained by a private individual under a lease agreement with Acadia National Park.
Best viewed by boat, some of the ferries and sightseeing cruises in the area pass the island.
