Calais
Situated on the St. Croix river, right across the border from its Canadian sister city, St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Calais is an international city and offers shops, restaurants and attractions that reflect this.
The St. Croix Island International Historic Park overlooks St. Croix Island in the St. Croix River, first settled by Samuel Champlain in 1604. This was the first European settlement in North America north of St. Augustine Florida. Calais wasn't permanently settled until 1770, but the history and traditions go much deeper. History buffs will want to see the three historic districts as well.
If you venture across the border, be sure to visit St. Stephen's Chocolate Museum as well.
