Local Lore and Storytellers

Our region is rich in local legends, such as Tall Barney, the mysterious footprint on the grave of Jonathan Buck or the annual "Flyku" contest, during the Black Fly Breeders convention that takes place every year on Feb 29. You will also want to experience some of the rich traditions and stories of the Passamaquoddy People who have lived on this land for centuries.

Many authors find inspiriation here. Check out the local stores to pick up a book with the local flavor to read in the evenings or to take home and remember your visit. Or if you like to feel a little chill, read a few local ghost stories and legends.

If you're traveling with children, or if you're a child at heart, consider reading E.B. White's classics, Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan or Robert McCloskey's Blueberries for Sal and One Morning in Maine, and countless other wonderful stories by many authors.
